Tuscany dream

Tuscany dream daily pastel painting

5" by 10 1/2" daily pastel painting, unframed

If I could choose a place to visit and paint it would be Tuscany. The way cypress trees tower over the landscape has a magical quality. I applied my pastels thicker than usual on this painting to capture the thickness of the vegetation. I had a few reference photos which I studied and then put them aside to work from memory to capture the feeling of the place.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Portugal daily pastel painting
7 1/2" by 8 1/2" daily pastel painting, unframed

Alto de Varejao, Lisbon, Portugal

Painted from a shot on Google Maps for the Virtual Paintout Art Challenge.
I know it's not my usual style. I allowed myself to just have fun with the colors. The buildings made that easy since the ones on this particular street are very old and worn, yet colorful.

shell and cloth

shell and cloth daily pastel painting
8" by 9" daily pastel painting, unframed

The first time I ever painted a cloth was in art class at the Worcester Art Museum school. It was the first lesson in my painting class and I thoroughly enjoyed it. That was many years ago when I was in my early twenties.
I still find the subject challenging and I love a challenge.
I choose the shell to add a contrasting texture. I think it works well!

abandoned horse

auction horse daily pastel painting

8" by 12" daily pastel painting

unframed
SOLD

My son Ben who lives in Arizona informed me that there is a rise of abandoned and neglected horses in Arizona. Rather than bringing them to shelters many owners have been letting them loose in the wild.

20% of the sale of this painting will go to a horse rescue league in Arizona. The purchaser of this painting will receive a receipt of the donation made to the shelter. If you wish to choose a rescue league please let me know.

Other news! My painting "Drumstick" won First Place in The Hopedale, MA Cultural Council's art show today.

galaxy bar

milky way candy bar daily pastel painting
8" by 8" daily pastel painting, unframed   SOLD

Unlike the cupcake, I ate this Milky Way bar when I finished painting it. I had to break a piece off it slowly to get the creamy caramel to flow like it did.
This was one of my childhood favorites with cavities to prove it. When I had my own children I became the chocolate thief. These days I try not to keep the stuff around the house.
I loved painting this. I'm looking for texture challenges.

cheesecake daily painting

SOLD

My favorite dessert of all time. A bit fattening so I only have it occasionally when I absolutely crave it.
The biggest challenge in painting this was creating the illusion of the cheese.

chinese food box daily painting

"Presentation"
8" by 6 1/2" daily pastel painting, unframed

I always liked the presentation of chinese food in a box. Simple, functional and somehow elegant.
I came across the reference pic in my photos of the last visit I had with my son and his wife in Arizona. The photo was boring and I'm always happy when the painting looks so much better than the photo.

After painting "cupcakes" for the art challenge my sweet tooth kicked in. The challenge of representing the creaminess of frosting was a fun project.

This painting was done from a photograph provided on the blog Different Strokes From Different Folks.
I had fun working on this painting. It's so festive!

I'm starting to get back to scheduling more frequent daily works.

I had some great news last week. I received a certificate in the mail from the Artist's Magazine. My painting "Olives in a Colander" got a finalist award in their annual competition. It will be mentioned in the December 2009 issue.
