Another Cloud in a Coffee and SALE

Another Cloud in a Coffee daily pastel painting
6" by 6" daily pastel painting, unframed
SOLD

It must be that I'm a coffee addict and I love clouds, because this isn't the first cloud in a coffee that I've painted. I love the way it looks. It's surreal yet it could be a dollop of whipped cream.

It's a good thing I ordered a set of "white" pastels a few months ago because I used quite a number of them.

Lucio's parrot

parrot daily pastel painting
5" by 5" daily pastel painting, unframed

I think it's a parrot. My friend Lucio Tamino Gruber lives in Brazil and he's given me permission to use his photos as references for paintings. I believe this is his bird but then again it could just be a regular visitor of his. Lucio?

Lucio is an amazing painter and he paints really large works unlike the tiny paintings here on my blog. You can view his work here.

This is another painting which I've tried to abstract as much as is comfortable for me. lol

apple from the tree

apple from the tree daily pastel painting
7" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

It's still apple season here in New England. It's been years since I've gone apple picking. The closest orchard was torn down many years ago. The land all those trees once stood on is still void of anything new.
I love local apples but I'm allergic to them if they are not cooked. They make my throat itchy, as does cantaloupe. Weird.
I do so love to paint them.

I wasn't sure what to paint this morning but I knew I needed another cup of coffee after a late night and not enough sleep. So what else to paint but this simple coffee cup?

which key?

keys pastel painting
7" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed
SOLD

Another semi-abstract piece. I've been working on a series of paintings and I don't have the same amount of time left to do detailed pieces each day . . .I will again soon though.
I'm actually having fun with more abstraction in my paintings. When I was much younger most of the work I did was abstract.
At the time I was moving towards a look (unknowingly) that was similar to Georgia O'Keeffe's. And then I saw some of her work. I decided to move in a different direction because I didn't want to be viewed as an imitator. As a result I decided to follow the road of contemporary realism.
These days it's not about the technique as much as the process and the next painting.

Grand Canyon daily pastel

Grand Canyon daily pastel painting

I totally let go with this painting. Mere suggestions. Love, love the colors. I've seen some mountain ranges in my life, including the Alps but  nothing created such a feeling of awe for me as the Grand Canyon. I was mesmerized.

daily button fly jeans

daily button fly jeans daily pastel painting

How do you abstract a pair of jeans and still maintain the essence? This was my attempt. I was going for a free style as I did in the last post of the work boots painting. Let me know what you think.

daily work boots

daily work boots daily pastel painting
7" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

I wasn't sure what I wanted to paint today so I checked my hard drive which is full of photos that I haven't painted yet.

This photo was used for an art challenge at Different Strokes from Different Folks. I don't remember the date and I couldn't find it on the site (and I don't really want to spend much time looking), but when the challenge was on I didn't have the time to paint it.

I'm so glad that I saved the image! The shoes remind me of an earlier time in my life when I worked as a layout and paste-up artist in graphics departments. My self made "uniform" for those years was always a denim skirt and work boots. Hey . . it was the '70's.

I absolutely loved working on this piece. The style is so much looser than I usually work.

2 clementines

clementine oranges daily pastel painting
5" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

Back to the clementine oranges. I can't stop eating them and I can't stop painting them!
I love the combination of blues and oranges. I took the reference photo on my black glass topped stove which explains the reflection underneath. I almost painted the background black but I wanted this painting to pop.

Some news - I was very pleased to have been accepted into the Daily Painters International Art Gallery group this weekend. Thank you Madison!

magic wand

magic wand daily pastel painting
6" by 6" daily pastel painting, unframed

This painting is my response to Calypso Moon Artist Movement's challenge for November. The challenge is to paint history and capture a moment in time that you've witnessed that involve/include people.

I knew immediately which photo I wanted to use. In 2001 we turned my husband's business trip into a mini family vacation. My son Cory and I went exploring for 4 days while Gary worked.
The reference photo for this painting was taken at Red Rock Creek Trail in Sedona, AZ. That's Cory stirring the water with the stick. He was  almost 10 years old at the time.

If you are ever near Sedona, go there! It's a beautiful place.
I saturated the colors of the rock a bit but not by much. Because of the small size of my working area I had a difficult time with the hands. I tried to minimize the detail leaving the suggestion of hands. While I struggled my mantra became "I should have used acrylics." Overall I'm fairly happy with it. It brings back some great memories of our adventures.
In case you are curious, his face did not show in the photo either ;-)

Sarah's Shoes

sarahs shoes daily acrylic painting
5" by 5" daily acrylic painting   SOLD
painted on a hardboard panel and ready to hang

These are Sarah Bowie's shoes or "chucks" as she calls them. She posted a photo of them on facebook and I just had to paint them (with her permission) after cropping the image a bit. Uh oh . . I just peeked at her blog to get the url and I spotted another pair of shoes to paint!
Anyway, Sarah is the biggest art collector I know. Included in her collection are a couple of my paintings and various others from the Daily Painters.

Thanks to Sarah and the many others who own my paintings, I can continue to follow my passion without getting a "real" job.
