sunflower art challenge

6" x 6" daily pastel painting
unframed - painted on canson mi-teintes paper

March's art challenge for Shoot and Paint. If you take a peek at the challenge photo you'll see that there's a lot going on in it. I decided to simplify it and focus on the flower without paying too much attention to detail.

Spring is on it's way but we are having our first of the season snow storm today! Arrghh

The Eurasian eagle owl is definitely my favorite of all the owls and I've been told one of the largest with a wing span of  55–79 inches. I love their eyes!
worked on capturing the feathers without too much detail. I'm been working on loosening up my hand a bit.

pygmy owl painting

8" x 8" pastel painting
SOLD

Some days I procrastinate because I'm not sure what to paint. Today was one of those days and then I remembered the photos I have of owls. Some of you who are old enough might remember the popularity of owl paintings in the 1970's. I thought of it when I painted my mushroom, which was also a popular subject at the time.

Isn't he cute!

Dawn - acrylic female nude

acrylic female nude painting
"Dawn"
10" x 10" daily acrylic painting
surface - gallery wrapped canvas - 1 1/4" deep

Finally, a new painting! I worked out a sketch for this nude painting months ago. I started working on it a few days ago and the approach was slow. If I take too much time off from work I tend to feel that I've somehow forgotten how to use the medium.
Knowing when it's finished is also a frequent challenge. To add more detail or not. Do I tweak the colors more, add more washes? I love the process but I'm also happy when I'm satisfied with the result because I can move on to the next painting.

Thanks to Sophie, my favorite model for nude paintings.

Ghost Ranch oil painting

Ghost Ranch daily pastel painting
12" by 12" oil painting, unframed stretched canvas, ready to hang

This is an older painting which may be new to some of you. The reference photo for this oil painting was one of the many that I took during my stay in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking!

I'm leaving for Arizona tomorrow to visit my son Ben and his wife Samantha. It will be a welcomed vacation and I can't wait to see them!
The last few weeks have been full of life distractions, but when I return from my trip I hope to get busy on some new work.

fruits of the garden

pastel painting
NFS

This is an older painting of vegetables which I had grown in my garden.
I've been busy with my father these days who is going downhill health wise. Because of this I haven't had as much time to paint. I used the photo reference for the February Shoot and Paint art challenge.
Check it out! We already have some great submissions. Artists - come join us. . it's free.
